Web Design Mistakes You Need to Avoid

Sharing is caring!

Redesigning your website is not a small matter. It can be quite a complex process and you will need to dedicate significant resources, in terms of money and manpower, in order to develop a website that attracts and converts visitors.

Unfortunately, simply spending time and money does not guarantee that you will be able to develop a website that fulfills its objectives. We have seen too many cases where a website was not developed according to modern best practices and following recent web design trends.

For example, some websites are still being developed in Flash while others may be using elements that do not render properly in all devices. In this article, we will go through some of the more common web design mistakes that you can recognise and avoid during your next redesign project.

Confusing Navigation

Your website navigation is one of the most important elements of a website. Keep in mind that people visit your site to solve a problem or get information, not to marvel at the beauty of your design. This means that you need to ensure that your website is able to provide them with that they are looking for fast. Do not make them guess what they are clicking on. A big no-no is what we call mystery meat navigation. Never do that.

Not Mobile-Friendly

With more and more people surfing the web using their smartphones and other mobile devices, you need to ensure that your new website is able to provide these mobile visitors with a great experience. The invention of the smartphone has made the mobile web into a reality. Most people would rather surf on their handphones than on a desktop. Do not trust anyone who tells you that your website does not need to be mobile-friendly.

Slow Page Load Speed

A fast website experience is table stakes in 2019 and beyond. Do not think that you can get away with a slow-loading page as research indicates that the average visitor’s patience is getting shorter and shorter. A website that is excruciatingly¬†slow will cause your website visitors to leave and visit your competitors’ sites instead.

There are many tools and guides online that can help you get your website to load faster. Pingdom and Webpagetest have free tools that you should check out if you want to be able to speed up your site.

Not Search Engine-Friendly

Search engines help people navigate the ever-growing maze that is the Internet. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing crawl every single website online, categorise them in their search databases, and when someone types in a query, the search engines will instantaneously show the results that their algorithms thinks is the most relevant.

One of the main issues here is that search engines such as Google will change their algorithms constantly. Also, there are many factors that need to be considered when determining which website to show first for any particular search query so it is almost impossible for a website to be completely optimised.

This does not mean that you shouldn’t be trying though. A website that does not show up in the search engine ranking pages is considered invisible in the Internet. You need to make search engine optimisation a priority for you and your team. If you cannot find a web design firm who is able to competently optimise your website for search, you can approach one of the many SEO companies in Malaysia and we’re sure that they can offer you more alternatives.
